Why My Father's Health Scare Made Me Start Beyond The Sugar (A Beyond The Sugar Founder's Diary)

It Started With My Father's Blood Report

My father, Ajay Mehta, spent over three decades as a banker. Desk at 9. Meetings until 8. Home for dinner. Repeat.

Like millions of Indians in white-collar jobs, his life was built around routine and that routine, quietly and without drama, was making him sick. Not in an obvious way. Not in a way that showed up in how he looked or how he felt on most days. But it was there, building in the background, in his blood.

When his reports came back showing pre-diabetes fasting glucose elevated, HbA1c creeping toward the danger zone  the doctor's advice was predictable: lose weight, exercise more, cut sugar.

Simple to say. Incredibly hard to do when you're 55, set in your ways, and sugar is woven into every part of your day. The morning chai. The office biscuits. The mithai at every family occasion. The small pleasures that make a long day feel worth it.

That moment sitting with my father, looking at that report is where Beyond The Sugar began.

The Problem Nobody Was Solving

I started researching. I wanted to find products that could help my father reduce sugar without feeling like he was giving something up. Products that fit into an Indian lifestyle not imported keto bars or American protein shakes, but things that worked with chai, with Indian cooking, with the way we actually eat.

What I found was a gap. A big one.

The Indian market had stevia sachets with a bitter aftertaste nobody liked. It had “sugar-free” products loaded with artificial sweeteners that came with their own health questions. It had imported monk fruit products at prices that made them inaccessible for daily use.

Nobody had built something specifically for the Indian palate, the Indian kitchen, and the Indian lifestyle disease crisis we were quietly walking into as a country.

So I decided to build it.

What “Beyond The Sugar” Actually Means

The name isn't just a tagline. It's a philosophy.

Going “beyond sugar” doesn't mean deprivation. It doesn't mean giving up sweetness, or joy, or the foods that connect you to your culture and your family. It means finding a better way one that doesn't cost you your health.

My father didn't need to stop having chai. He needed a better sweetener in it. He didn't need to skip Diwali mithai. He needed a version made with ingredients that wouldn't spike his blood glucose. He didn't need to overhaul his entire life overnight. He needed one better product at a time.

That's the mission: help people move beyond sugar, one product at a time.

Why We Started With a Sweetener

The first product Super Sweetener was built for my father. Specifically for his chai.

We spent months testing formulations. Stevia alone was too bitter. Erythritol had texture issues and emerging safety questions. Monk fruit alone didn't add the body that sugar gives chai. Allulose alone required too much quantity.

The answer was a precision blend: monk fruit for clean, intense sweetness, and allulose for body, mouthfeel, and cooking behaviour. No aftertaste. No artificial additives. Zero glycemic index. And critically it worked in chai. It worked in halwa. It worked in kheer. It worked in everything my father's kitchen demanded.

When he tried it for the first time and said it tasted like the real thing, that was the moment I knew we had something.

The Bigger Picture: India's Lifestyle Disease Crisis

My father's story is not unique. It is, in fact, extraordinarily common.

India has over 101 million people living with diabetes the highest absolute number in the world. An estimated 136 million more are pre-diabetic. Obesity rates are climbing. Cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death. And at the centre of all of it, quietly fuelling the crisis, is our relationship with sugar.

We are a culture that expresses love through food. That celebrates with sweets. That starts every morning with a cup of chai that has two spoons of sugar in it. These aren't bad things they're beautiful things. But they need a better foundation.

Beyond The Sugar exists to provide that foundation. Not by telling people to stop eating the foods they love, but by making those foods better without compromise on taste, without compromise on culture, and without compromise on health.

Where We Are Now

Since launching, we've expanded beyond the sweetener. Fuel Daily and Fuel Pro were built for the same person the Indian adult who knows they need more protein but doesn't want a product that tastes like a supplement. Clean ingredients. No added sugar. Designed for Indian lifestyles.

Every product we build starts with the same question: would this have helped my father?

If the answer is yes, we build it.

A Note to Anyone Reading This

If you're reading this because someone you love got a blood report that scared you. I understand that feeling. I've sat in that chair.

The good news is that pre-diabetes is reversible. Lifestyle diseases, caught early, respond to lifestyle changes. And those changes don't have to mean giving up everything that makes life enjoyable.

They just mean going beyond sugar. One product, one cup of chai, one better choice at a time.

That's what we're here for.
